Jill Barthorpe

Born in Nottinghamshire, England in 1961, Jill Barthorpe has exhibited art for over 25 years. She attended the Slade School of Art in London, graduating in 1985. During her education, Barthorpe won a scholarship to paint in southwest France for a year, where she studied in the footsteps of the great Impressionists that redefined light and color among their contemporary art community. After developing her own style of capturing light en plein air, she spent more time in France, as well as traveling throughout England, Italy, and Spain to provide additional inspiration for her work. She currently resides in Lincolnshire, England; the rural setting providing much of the material for her paintings.

Working with oil on canvas, Jill Barthorpe uses geometric patterns and lines to capture the image of her subject without losing the essence and movement of light, shadow, and colour. Barthorpe mostly paints landscapes and still life; she emphasizes the natural character of settings and subjects rather than mere literal likeness. Balancing a career as a painter and a career as a bookkeeper has contributed to her point of view as a painter; she approaches each painting with discipline and an emphasis on understanding her subject.

Barthorpe’s contemporary artwork has been exhibited consistently in many galleries in London including the Oakham Gallery, the Mercer Art Gallery, and the Panter Hall Gallery. Her works have also been sold through Christie’s.  She has also had an exhibition at the Clarke Galleries in Stowe, Vermont.  Most recently, her work was exhibited in the Spring 2014 exhibition at the Francis Iles Gallery in Rochester, England.
